Visitation: after 10 a.m. today with family visitation from 7 to 9 tonight, Johnson Funeral Home, Maryville Mental illness: hastens end to ex-lawyer's hobo lifestyle Schizophrenia may have contributed to downward spiral that claimed a life Associated Press TOPEKA, Kan.

At one point, Michael Lee Griffith seemed to have it all a brilliant mind, a law degree, an expertise in bridge and a family. Hardly the expected epitaph of a 53-year-old transient beaten to death in a hobo camp in March, his body found with a blanket covering his bloodied head, blue windbreaker, red plaid shirt and brown pants. Griffith's life was a downward spiral over more than two decades, a spiral prompted by mental illness most likely schizophrenia that left him incapable of coping with the world. "He was struggling with mental illness but he didn't want to take his medicine. I just think he went into his own world," said his 32-year-old married daughter, Lee, who asked that her last name not be used.

"My mother said he never wanted to work nine to five and have any responsibility," she added. In the mid-1 Meinecke was a Washburn University law professor and had Griffith as a student. He recalled Griffith as an excellent student and a Life Master the highest honor for bridge players. But things began to change for Griffith after he graduated and received his law license in 1975. "Mike began acting strange.

He was getting messages from people not there, from other planets and stuff like that," Meinecke said. In 1978, the Kansas Supreme Court placed him on disabled inactive status, which meant he couldn't practice law. That status didn't change for the rest of his life. No motive for the killing has been disclosed. The suspect faces a preliminary hearing next month.
