The most iconic part of the modern cottage design is beam work and natural stone. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a modern cottage home that doesn’t have a cozy stone fireplace or some impressive beam work on the ceiling. Both of these natural features help bring the outdoors in and give your space a sense of intimacy that the cottage style is known for.
Neutral and Natural Color Palette
The difference between Modern Cottage and Modern Coastal style is all in the color choice. Typically a modern cottage home will have a very light and neutral color palette perhaps with a few minimal pops of color and a lot of patterns. The use of pattern helps emphasize more natural colors while the main base of your furnishings and decor should be neutral.
Arched Doorways
We love arched doorways anytime we see them, and the modern cottage style has them in spades. Modeled after the country homes in England and France these arched doorways add a sense of whimsy and create the illusion that the space is more open and larger than it might actually be.
Modern Clean Lines
In order to achieve the modern part of modern cottage, you’ve got to work with simple, classic, clean lines. We often see this in the modern cottage style with shiplap and beadboard details, or perhaps board and batten. Of course, you’ll also see clean crisp lines on your furniture which helps make those vintage and more traditional pieces standout.
Emphasis on Fireplace Design
Can you say, “hygge?” Me neither haha. If you had to sum up the modern cottage style in one word it would be - cozy. Centering your living space around the fireplace helps emphasize it as the focal point not only from a design aspect but from a functional one as well.
