Can you believe just how amazing this Sweet Potato Pizza Crust Looks?

Sweet Potato Pizza Crust recipe - Slimming Eats Recipes (1)

Since trying to switch to a more clean eating style within Slimming Eats, I have been using coconut flour a lot more and I love it as I have discovered you actually do not need to use as much as you do normal flour because it is so fibrous. Recently I made some Sweet Potato Cheddar scones, which was actually kind of an experiment, but I was impressed with the texture and had in my mind to try out some ingredients for a Sweet Potato Pizza Crust. I love the cauliflower pizza crust, but you don’t quite get that crisp crust, unless you add lots of cheese and of course we want to save as much cheese as we can for the topping right?

Well this Sweet Potato Pizza Crust recipe will not disappoint, it holds together well and the crust really does crisp up, just like you expect a pizza crust to be. I don’t recommend subbing the coconut flour with normal flour, as you will need a lot more in ratio. Coconut flour can be found at most grocery stores now, as it is becoming more and more popular. However you can also order on amazon here: Coconut Flour . For the tapioca starch/flour, you can also substitute with another starch like arrowroot or cornstarch, all 3 will work the same, so it doesn't matter which one you use.

For the toppings, you can follow my topping suggestion or add your own, once you have the crust made, you are free to vary it up with all different kinds of toppings. I barbecue sauce would be great spread on this too, like my No Added Sugar Barbecue Sauce. Don't forget I also have delicious Homemade Pizza Sauce so if you have some of that made up, use that on the pizza base, instead of the quick pizza sauce version in this recipe.

The basics to this Sweet Potato Pizza Crust also work really well as a wrap to use for kebabs etc, check out my Sweet Potato Flatbread which is great with my Lamb Kofta.

Save time too, by making up some of these Sweet Potato Pizza Crust'sin advance, just bake them to before adding the topping part, and then freeze, all you have to do next time you want one, is take out of the freezer, add toppings, place on a baking tray and bake as normal.

and if you are paleo or dairy free, you can also enjoy this yummy pizza, by omitting the cheese and just adding some yummy toppings of your choice.

I hope you enjoy!!

Looks delicious, but it's not AIP friendly. Tomatoes are a part of the nightshade family. )= But substitute a 'faux'-mato sauce that would work!

I don't have coconut flour... my 'people' don't like the taste of coconut (go figure!)
All I have on hand is almond flour, would that work?
Or if I buy coconut flour, will the taste of coconut be evident in the crust?

You really don't taste the coconut as it is a small amount. I can't say whethe it will work with almond flour as I haven't tried.

Can regular flour be used instead of coconut?

    Reply

    • Shevy (Slimming Eats) says

Regular flour is not as fibrous as coconut flour, therefore you would need a lot more in ratio for it to work, which in turn would also increase the syns.

Can something be used as a replacement to Coconut flour? I'm allergic so can't touch it but I really want to try this recipe.

If you are not gluten free, regular flour should work okay. I have some readers who have used regular flour for this and had great results. Hope that helps 🙂

Do you think these bases will freeze well? Pizza is my downfall so when I've made cauliflower crust I've put some into freezer without the topping. Really like the sound if this crusty base.

Double check what you are using is definitely parchment paper. Nothing at all sticks to parchment.

Does pizza dough need salt and sugar? ›

Salt: Salt adds necessary flavor. Sugar: 1 Tablespoon of sugar increases the yeast's activity and tenderizes the dough, especially when paired with a little olive oil. Cornmeal: Cornmeal isn't in the dough, but it's used to dust the pizza pan. Cornmeal gives the pizza crust a little extra flavor and crisp.

How to blind bake pizza crust? ›

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (with a pizza stone inside, if you have one). Add cornmeal and flour to a pizza peel or use a pizza pan. Pick the top of the dough a few times with a fork and pre-bake the dough in the pizza pan, or slide onto a hot pizza stone to pre-bake for 3-4 minutes.

Should you put olive oil on pizza crust before the sauce? ›

Before you add the sauce or any toppings, lightly brush the stretched pizza dough with olive oil and prick it all over with a fork. Brushing it with oil will prevent any excess moisture from seeping into the crust. No more soggy pizza crust!

Should you cook pizza crust before adding toppings? ›

Bake the naked pizza dough in the oven at 450 degrees for 7 minutes. During this time prep your toppings. I am sort of a purist so it's sauce, cheese , and seasoning. Never add the toppings to raw pizza dough.

What happens if you don't put sugar in pizza dough? ›

Sugar is an oft-misunderstood ingredient in dough. Some people believe that it's necessary to include sugar to feed the yeast. In truth, yeast is perfectly happy munching on flour. If you don't want to add sugar, you don't have to, and there are plenty of breads where sugar is completely unnecessary.

What happens if you leave sugar out of pizza dough? ›

Sugar helps the dough rise faster, and increases browning. So using it is a matter of taste, and what you like in a pizza. If you're in for a day-long rise in the refrigerator (for example), you won't need any extra sugar.

What happens if you add sugar to pizza dough? ›

Sugar not only adds flavor, but is helpful in the fermentation of the yeast. It will also give your dough that lovely golden brown color diners are looking for. Additionally, sugar increases the moisture retention of your dough, tenderizing the crust.

What happens if you don't blind bake a crust? ›

Some recipes like quiches recommend partially cooked pie shells because the baking time wouldn't be long enough to fully cook the dough otherwise. Pre-baking a crust can ensure that your pie or tart crust will be fully baked and browned, and not soggy.

Can you use aluminum foil to blind bake crust? ›

Blind Bake Crust: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line the chilled pie dough with aluminum foil and use granulated sugar to fill the whole pie plate. Bake for 40 minutes; remove the foil and sugar and set the crust aside while you make the filling.

Can I refrigerate my pizza dough and bake it later? ›

At which point during the dough making process would it be best to freeze or refrigerate? You can refrigerate the dough after almost any step, but after the first rise (or a little before) works best. Store it, covered, in the refrigerator for 1-3* days. Allow room for the dough to expand as it will continue to rise.

What can I add to pizza crust for flavor? ›

Pizza Dough Flavor Enhancers

Barley Malt Syrup – Barley malt syrup is used to add flavor and sweetness to dough. If you use a dough recipe that calls for sugar, try substituting this instead. Not only will you get a hint of sweetness and a slight improvement in browning, you'll also get some extra flavor.

How do you make pizza crust less bland? ›

You must have salt in a dough recipe. If you don't it will taste bland and flat. This by itself could be causing it to taste the way you are describing as “bready”. For every 3 cups of flour, you should be adding at least 1 tsp of salt minimum.

Why does my pizza crust taste bland? ›

Too little yeast and your dough won't rise enough, and the pizza base will taste bland. Use too much yeast and your dough may over-ferment. Tell-tale signs are your dough expanding too much or tasting and smelling a bit sour, with an almost alcoholic aftertaste (the yeast produces alcohol as it ferments).

How can I make my pizza taste better? ›

Baldwin suggests making your toppings yourself for the best homemade pizza. "Slice your own pepperoni for a thicker cut, roast red peppers and garlic, crumble and sauté some sausage," she says. "Doing all these things from scratch makes the pizza truly great."
