5 homes damaged, multiple people displaced after intense fire sends smoke billowing into the air in Whitehall Twp. (21)

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Seven companies and about 100 firefighters battled a blaze in a row of houses in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County Monday night.

Two homes were destroyed, and others were damaged, but not one person was injured.

Residents are picking up the pieces after the fire left a scorched trail of devastation.

"Well I got my passport." A passport and a drawer-full of papers and boxes is all that Ibrahim Zeidan could save from his home.

The fire started around 11 a.m. Monday at the 400 block of Carolina Avenue. Filling the air with flames and smoke, it quickly spread to other houses.

Zeidan was in a college class when he found out.

"I checked online. Turns out my house was the one being shish-kabobed," said Zeidin.

Whitehall Deputy Fire Marshal Mark Bilder says the homes were built in the '70s or '80s before firewalls were required by law. There were firewalls in the homes, Bilder said, but they only went up three floors and did not reach into the attic or crawl space.

He says Monday's good weather kept the fire from getting worse.

"We didn't have a high wind, so we didn't have a spread. Once we got the trench cut in place, that stopped the spread of the fire, we were able to extinguish the fire at that point," Bilder said.

The fire jumped to the home of Wilson Torres, burning a small hole in the roof and melting the siding, but the damage was minor.

Wilson says his pets are safe, and so are his neighbors, a senior couple next door, who came to his house in tears. Wilson took them in.

"She was screaming, she was crying and screaming, he was saying that the fire started in the back of the house like where the kitchen is," Torres said.

In total, about a dozen people were displaced, and five homes were damaged, two beyond repair, including Zeidan's, who came to America from Syria four years ago. This was his family's first American home, and now, they find themselves starting over again.

"Everyone is safe, thank Jesus Christ, the Lord of Nazareth," said Zeidan.

"My family are really devastated. Especially my mom and dad."

Bilder says the damage was so extensive, crews have been unable to determine what caused the fire. He said an area, where they believe the fire started, collapsed, so the cause will remain undetermined.

Bilder said the insurance company involved will conduct its own fire investigation.
